The government in Alberta passed a new law called with Bill 11, also known as the Health Statutes Amendment Act 2025 (No. 2). The law could change how health care pays the profiteers in Health care. It would create a new system were corporations would be allowed to deliver in our health care system.
This means that some doctors would be able to work both in the public health care system (which is paid for by taxes) and in private clinics (where patients might have to pay out of pocket). These private clinics could charge patients extra money for services that are usually covered in public health care.
This kind of system is different from what we have now. Right now, Canada's health care system is based on the idea that everyone should get necessary health care based on their needs, not on how much money they have. Bill 11 could change that, allowing wealthier people to pay for faster or better care, while others might have to wait longer or go without care.
Chris Gallaway, a leader of Friends of Medicare, says that the government did not promise to create a two-tiered system. He believes this new law goes against what people voted for and could harm public health care, which is important for all Canadians.
