On behalf of the Manitoba Federation of Union Retirees (MFUR), we wish all seniors good health and best wishes today, October 1st, the UN International Day of Older Persons and Canada’s National Seniors Day.
We recognize the many contributions of Manitoba’s seniors to all communities throughout the province.
MFUR supports all efforts to ensure that seniors are able to live with dignity, to make their own choices, to have access to quality public services and to be able to take part in community activities at every age.
As retired trade unionists we also support today’s workers, including calls by the Manitoba Federation of Labour for a Living Wage for all workers. Whether it is the threat posed by U.S. tariffs, or AI and the challenges it poses for society at large, MFUR members support legislation to ensure that all workplaces are safe and that all workers are protected by our Workers Compensation system.
We join senior organizations throughout the globe in calling for a new United Nations (UN) convention to protect older people’s human rights. The convention would include prohibition of all forms of age discrimination; protection of choice and independence for all seniors; strong protection to prevent abuse and neglect of seniors; and improved access to quality public services for all seniors and indeed all citizens.
Just one day after the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, MFUR members pledge our support for ongoing efforts to enact the 94 calls to action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
