Letter to Manitoba Seniors' Advocate from MFUR

MFUR has recently sent the following letter to the newly appointed Seniors’ Advocate for Manitoba:

November 14, 2025

Ms. Leigh Anne Caron
Manitoba Seniors’ Advocate
Government of Manitoba
Legislative Building,
450 Broadway Winnipeg, MB R3C 0V8

Dear Ms. Caron:

On behalf of the Manitoba Federation of Union Retirees (MFUR) I am writing to congratulate you on your appointment and wish you the very best as you begin the important work of this new and important public office.

MFUR is the Manitoba affiliate of the 500,000 member Congress of Union Retirees of Canada (CURC).  We are retired trade union activists; our by-laws include the following objectives:

2.2    To petition unions and legislators for the introduction and enactment of
          legislation on measures to improve the health and welfare of all retired
          persons, consistent with the policies of the Canadian Labour Congress.

2.3    To fight for the rights for all retired persons to have an equitable
          standard of living.

We would welcome the opportunity to sit down with you to discuss our joint goal of creating a healthy community for all Manitoba seniors.
Yours truly,

Paul Moist, President
Manitoba Federation of Union Retirees

In September 2025, MFUR joined with a coalition of seniors’ groups and community organizations to publicly launch a campaign that sets out its priorities for the new Seniors Advocate Office.  The four key priorities include:

(1) a review of the impact/cost of for-profit and non-profit long- term care facilities;
(2) a review of the supply of housing options for seniors, including independent living, assisted living and supportive housing;
(3) a review of the home care system to ensure older adults have the required supports to age-in-place; and
(4) to establish a seniors advisory council to oversee the new Seniors Advocate Office.

MFUR will keep the membership updated as more information becomes available.
