This labour day we celebrate the efforts of the 21 million Canadians who go to work each day. Our country’s trade unions continue to struggle to gain fair wages and benefits and safe workplaces for their members.
The attacks on our economy by U.S. President Donald Trump threatens the interests of workers in many key sectors including auto, steel, aluminum not to mention the challenges facing the agricultural sector due to Chinese tariffs.
Now is the time for all provinces to unite with the federal government to protect and diversify our economy through expanded trade and commerce with other countries. Now is not the time for austerity. The public services that Canadians value are needed now more than ever, and we call on all governments to invest in the health and well-being of all citizens.
As retired union activists we pledge this labour day to continue to support workers on all picket lines and campaigns to protect good paying jobs. We also pledge our support to young workers and the many Canadians working in the so-called “gig economy” who deserve legislative backing to protect their right to fair wages and working conditions.
MFUR members, affiliated to the 500,000 member Congress of Union Retirees of Canada, wish all workers a happy labour day. Be assured that we will continue to support you in every way possible going forward.
Happy Labour Day!!!
