Mark your calendars for September 1 and celebrate the achievements of workers at this year’s Winnipeg Labour Council’s Family Fun Day at Memorial Park. There will be plenty of fun activities for all ages starting at 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm.
Why do we celebrate Labour Day?
The origins of Labour Day can be traced back to an 1872 printers’ strike in Toronto, fighting for a nine-hour workday. The strikers’ victory was a major milestone in the changing relations between Canadian workers and their government.
We celebrate Labour Day to honour the contributions and achievements of workers and the labour movement in Canada, and the gains we’ve won:
- 8-hour workdays
- Higher wages and paid vacations
- Workplace safety laws
- The right to form trade unions
- Maternity and Parental Leave
As we reflect upon all that we have won, we also need to continue building worker power and union solidarity as we face the challenges ahead.
