International Day of the Older Persons, October 1, 2025: Statement of the Manitoba Federation Union Retirees (MFUR) President Paul Moist

Today is International Day of the Older Persons.

Read the Statement below from MFUR President Paul Moist:

The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution in 1990 declaring eachOctober 1st as the International Day of Older Persons. The UN theme this year is,“Older Persons Driving Local and Global Actions: Our Well-Being and OurRights”.

The Manitoba Federation of Union Retirees (MFUR) is affiliated with the 500,000-member, Congress of Union Retirees of Canada (CURC). This October 1st wesalute the many contributions of seniors towards building strong communitiesthroughout Manitoba. We thank all retirees for their commitment to communityand the many volunteer roles they fill throughout our province.

MFUR has aligned with several other seniors’ organizations in welcoming theestablishment of the Office of the Seniors Advocate. We look forward to meetingand working with the new Seniors Advocate set to assume office on November 1st,2025.

The issues of concern to Manitoba seniors are numerous and include affordableand accessible housing; homecare services; and a renewed commitment to constructing badly needed long-term care facilities that are publicly run and accessible to all seniors in need of such services.

This October 1st, MFUR commits to continue to advocate on behalf of all seniors and to support all workers seeking fairness through free collective bargaining rights. In the words of J. S. Woodsworth, “What we desire for ourselves, we wish for all.”

Happy International Day of Older Persons to all.
